I was raised by a single Korean immigrant mother in Queens, New York, an upbringing that shaped both my resilience and my lifelong exploration of identity and belonging. I later moved to South Korea, where I studied comparative literature and the arts and built a successful career in media. From the outside, life appeared stable and accomplished based on society, yet internally something began to unravel. Over time, what once felt meaningful became repetitive and inauthentic, leading to a period of deep disorientation that eventually brought me back to the United States and into profound questioning about existence, reality, and who I truly was beneath roles and achievements.
That questioning marked the beginning of a soul-searching journey. Feeling untethered from any clear sense of identity, I turned inward, exploring yoga, Buddhism, breathwork, and the subconscious mind through transpersonal and psychedelic-informed practices. These experiences became catalysts for deep healing and spiritual awakening, reconnecting me to the body, intuition, and a more authentic way of being.
Driven by curiosity about the mind and a desire to support others through similar inner terrain, I pursued formal training and became a clinical psychologist specializing in mind- body- spirit approaches to healing. Through years of working with individuals and facilitating group workshops, I came to recognize the unique power of collective healing - how transformation deepens when witnessed and held in community. The vision for this spiritual learning and community healing center emerged from that understanding and was further solidified when I met Johnny at a 5Rhythms dance. Our shared sense of purpose and aligned vision inspired the creation of this space: a place for exploration, growth, and remembrance of who we are, together.

Johnny Macadam is the spiritual advisor of HurPsyche Sanctuary, bringing over three decades of experience in spiritual guidance, yoga, meditation, and energy healing. His path began early- rooted in an intuitive sense of destiny and a deep inner knowing that he was meant to lead. Growing up gay, Johnny learned to question everything, which eventually became the doorway to his spiritual awakening. In his twenties, his journey deepened through AA and later expanded through the Huntington Beach Church of Religious Science, where seeing Reverend Marie Shelton openly come out as gay became a life-changing moment of liberation and spiritual permission. A pivotal influence in his development was a woman named Gladys, whose embodiment of self-mastery ignited his devotion and inspired him to step fully into his purpose.
Johnny is known for his ability to work directly with spirit through clear visions, intuitive guidance, and energetic transmission. In sessions and group settings, he blends spiritual insight with grounded healing practices, calling in spirit through drumming, rattles, Native American flute, breathwork, and sound healing. His work supports individuals in releasing emotional burdens, reconnecting with their inner truth, and awakening a deeper sense of clarity and direction. Rather than labeling spirituality, Johnny teaches that real healing comes from quieting the mind and allowing the heart to lead- while becoming conscious of one’s inner dialogue and the relationship one holds with the self.
Throughout his life, Johnny has guided countless individuals through yoga and spiritual practice, beginning as a Hatha yoga instructor and later expanding into Kundalini traditions, Reiki mastery, devotional spiritual paths, and shamanic healing modalities. He has also served his community extensively, including over 15 years of developing programs for LGBTQ centers and supporting recovery communities. As the spiritual advisor of HurPsyche Sanctuary, Johnny holds a vision of a powerful and supportive community rooted in authenticity, awakening, and self-discovery. He lives by a simple philosophy: “Don’t judge. Do unto others as you want done to yourself.” And his message to every seeker is clear: your strength, your ability, and your purpose are already within you- your work is to remember.
